ABOUT
SOUTHWARK PHSALTER
“The Southwark Psalter,” is a personal artwork, modest in size but grand in conception. It’s woven from strands, reflecting creation as an act of veneration, meditation on place and time. It acknowledges that we interpret the world through paradoxical lenses, our actions polluted by everyday considerations.
I found pleasure in making something precious and unique (not a commodity,) and I am interested in the personal nature of art. The original work when bound, will be made up of 54 hand illuminated images. This material may be protected by copyright.
SOUTHWARK PSALTER
Psalters were among the most popular types of illuminated manuscripts. They were first developed in the Latin West in 6th century Ireland and spread to the continent by the 8th century. Often they contained a calendar, a litany of saints, and new and old Testament canticles; as well as other devotional texts. The title 'Southwark Psalter' reflects my link to the London area of Southwark, its people and history. I call it a Psalter, as it reflects both spiritual and non-spiritual ideas of how we try to make sense of the unknown; sadly using these ideas to control, and sometimes exclude others.
